Ancient Ganesh Temple Still Soars at 3,000 Feet in Chhattisgarh - The 1,000-Year-Old Sanctuary Remains Standing Proud for Ganesh Chaturthi 2025
In the heart of Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district lies the enigmatic Dholkal Ganesha, a 1,000-year-old idol of Lord Ganesha that stands atop a hill at an altitude of around 3,000 feet. This ancient statue, adorned with a serpent carved across the stomach and shackles in place of the traditional sacred thread, is a living place of worship for the indigenous tribal communities and a must-visit during Ganesh Chaturthi.
The journey to this hidden gem begins in the quaint village of Faraspal, a short two-hour drive from Jagdalpur. The trek to Dholkal, spanning 7 kilometres, takes you through forest trails perfumed by wild jasmine and past towering anthills. Along the way, you'll encounter remnants of two ancient temples, one dedicated to Surya, the Sun God, and another to Devi Mata.
Rediscovered in 2012 after being hidden for centuries, the Dholkal Ganesha idol was initially found broken into pieces. The Archaeological Survey of India later restored the idol, which weighs approximately 500 kilogrammes and stands 2.5 to 3 feet tall. It's essential to note that the final stretch of the trek requires a patch of steep rock-climbing that requires caution.
The best time to visit Dholkal Ganesha is during winter (December through February) for a safer and more tranquil trek. However, it's advised to avoid the monsoon season due to slippery paths. Enlisting a trained local guide is essential for safety and navigation through the maze of forest paths.
Near the Dholkal Ganesha statue, there is a legend of a fierce mythical duel between sage Parashurama and Lord Ganesha. Parashurama, wielding his axe, struck Ganesha, causing Ganesha to lose a tooth. A nearby village named Faraspal and a small temple of Lord Parashurama commemorate this legend.
During Ganesh Chaturthi, Dholkal Ganesha sees special rituals and draws devotees for celebrations amid a serene setting. The idol, unique in its design, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or a spiritual seeker, the journey to Dholkal Ganesha promises an unforgettable experience.
In August-Sep 2025, the Dholkal Ganesha idol can be found in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district, waiting to welcome visitors on their quest for a touch of the divine amidst the beauty of nature.
