Ancient Find in Saxony: 3000-year-old riches unearthed!
Discovery of a 3000-Year-Old Bronze Treasure Unearthed in Klein Neundorf
In the quaint town of Klein Neundorf near Goerlitz, a remarkable archaeological discovery has been made. A treasure trove dating back to the Bronze Age, consisting of over 300 objects, has been unearthed after years of being lost to history.
The excavations, led by archaeologist Reinhard Jungk, took place from September 2023 to April 2024. The discovery was initially made by children in 1900 during potato harvesting, but the artifacts subsequently fell into oblivion. It was only recently that Dr. Jasper von Richthofen, the responsible director of the Goerlitz collections, rediscovered the documentation and suspected more findings in the ground.
The treasure, weighing over 16 kg, includes an array of weapons, axes, sickles, rings, and a broken sword. Among the finds is a rare fibula of the Spindlersfeld type, adding significant historical value to the hoard. Another notable discovery is a sword, suspected to be from South Germany.
The treasure, now the largest bronze hoard from the Upper Lusatian region and the second largest in the entire Free State, is currently being restored, documented, and scientifically evaluated. The work on the delicate finds will take several months to complete.
Dr. von Richthofen has announced that the treasure will be displayed in exhibitions, including one in Goerlitz. This provides an exciting opportunity for the public to witness this historical find up close.
The objects were carefully deposited in a small pit, possibly as a ritual, and the treasure's origins and significance are still being researched and analyzed. The discovery of bronze sickle fragments was the initial success during the search for the treasure. In August 2023, volunteers and experts began searching for the treasure, with initial success at the western edge of the defined investigation area.
The rediscovery of the Klein Neundorf treasure is a testament to the rich history of the region and the continued efforts of archaeologists to uncover the mysteries of the past. As the restoration and evaluation process continues, we look forward to gaining more insights into this fascinating find.
