Ancient blacksmiths in Trippstadt, Kaiserslautern district, set to power up a new water wheel
In the picturesque town of Karlstal near Trippstadt, a new addition is turning heads - a water wheel. This architectural marvel, reminiscent of the Middle Ages, is not just a sight to behold, but a functional piece of history.
The water wheel, a key component of a hammer mill, has been meticulously crafted and restored by Vincent Verschoor, a native Dutchman living in the West Palatinate. The project, a labour of love for Verschoor, took two years to complete and cost approximately 40,000 euros.
The water wheel was built in collaboration with a blacksmith named Heinrich Elting. The construction process was no easy feat, as finding someone with the expertise to build a water wheel today was challenging, according to Verschoor.
The new water wheel, with a diameter greater than five meters, is designed to rotate and drive three hammers for forging. This hammer mill restoration project includes five images, providing a visual journey of the construction process.
The water wheel is not just a relic of the past, but a stepping stone towards the future. The hall that housed the hammer mill during that time has been beautifully restored by Verschoor. In the future, the hall will serve as an event venue, hosting concerts, and will exhibit old blacksmithing and craft tools.
Authentic blacksmithing courses will also be offered for interested parties. This educational aspect of the project aims to preserve the traditional craftsmanship of blacksmithing and share it with the community.
The idea for this project originated from Verschoor, the owner of the Lower Hammer property. He discovered that there were already forges in Karlstal during the Middle Ages, and he felt compelled to revive this historical tradition.
Verschoor's dedication to this project is evident in every detail. From the collaboration with a skilled blacksmith to the restoration of the hall, every aspect of the project has been executed with precision and passion. The water wheel at Karlstal near Trippstadt is not just a historical artifact, but a testament to the enduring spirit of craftsmanship and the power of preserving history for future generations.
