Amidst the flood-stricken regions of Yakutia, the timely preparations for the approaching winter heating season are underway

Yakutsk, located in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in northeastern Russia, is known for being one of the coldest inhabited regions in the world. The heating season in this city typically begins when temperatures consistently drop below 8°C, which usually happens in the second half of September, between the 15th and 30th, depending on the weather conditions.

Details of the Heating Season

The heating season in Yakutsk is officially determined by local authorities based on weather forecasts and average temperatures. Once the season starts, houses, schools, hospitals, kindergartens, and other public facilities receive central heating. The heating period in Yakutsk can last up to seven to eight months, extending until the end of April or even early May.

Examples of Heating Season Start

  • In 2023, according to official reports, the heating season began in many regions of Jakutia from the 20th of September.
  • In previous years, the start of the heating season was often between the 16th and 25th of September.

Current Status

As I don't have real-time data about the weather in September 2025, it is recommended to consult local media in Yakutia or the weather service for the latest information. The official start date is usually announced a few days in advance.

In the Abyisk district, the heating season started on August 28, earlier than usual. However, for the exact date in Yakutsk for 2025, it is advisable to check the latest news from Yakutia.

The boiler house in the village of Kuberganya, located in the Abyisk district, is currently operational. Despite over a thousand power line towers being underwater, the energy workers ensured a reliable power supply to consumers in Yakutia.

Exceptions were made for facilities with water-submerged energy equipment, where power supply was temporarily suspended to prevent electrocution accidents. The utility and energy workers in Yakutia have completed all necessary work in a timely manner for the heating season.

Thanks to drying-out measures, the heating season started earlier than scheduled in several municipal formations in the Oymyakon district. The minister of Energy and Housing and Utilities in Yakutia, Vyacheslav Emelyanov, stated that preparations for the winter period in the flood-affected Oymyakon and Abyisk districts were made in a timely manner.

The minister thanked the 'Sakhaenergo' company for the challenging work done by the energy workers. However, further details about the impact of the early heating season start on the overall situation in the affected districts are not available.
