American Couple Trades California for Malta's Affordable Paradise
An American couple has swapped life in Northern California for the Mediterranean island of Gozo, Malta. After 25 years in the US, they now enjoy a lower cost of living while keeping their US Social Security income. The move has cut their expenses by around 50% compared to California. Their monthly rent for a luxury apartment is under $1,000 (€850), far less than they paid before. Utilities add another $180 (€150) per month, keeping bills manageable.
Food costs are also lower, with a monthly budget of $650 (€555). They now eat a Mediterranean diet rich in fresh, local produce. Healthcare remains affordable, with private insurance for both costing $4,600 (€3,950) annually. Malta's central location has made travel simpler and cheaper. Flights to European destinations are short and budget-friendly. The island offers both public and private healthcare, ensuring high standards without high costs.
The couple now lives comfortably on their US pensions. Their new lifestyle includes better food, lower expenses, and easy access to travel. Malta's affordability and quality of life have made the transition worthwhile.
