American baking corporation, operating 11 stores in the UK, decides to permanently close two central locations
In a surprise move, the American bakery chain Cinnabon has closed two of its branches in the city-centre of Newcastle, UK. The closures, announced on September 1, 2023, come just a few months after the first branch opened in August of the same year, and the second one took over the vacant premises of Patiserrie Valerie, which went into administration in 2019.
The flagship Cinnabon cafe in Tyneside, known for its in-house bakery producing fresh sweet treats, is now closed, leaving Geordies to venture further to get their Cinnabon fixes. The Deansgate store, which had attracted attention due to photos and videos of people eating the buns being shared on social media, also closed its doors, with a handwritten "closed" sign in the window and lights turned off during advertised opening hours.
Before its opening, queues of people stretched back towards Greyβs Monument for the Tyneside Cinnabon. The menu offered more than just the classic cinnamon bun with cream cheese frosting; extravagant flavours like the Lotus Biscoff Bon were also available.
Cinnabon expressed gratitude to its customers for their loyalty and continued support over the years. However, no information was provided about the reason for the closure of the two branches or the future plans of Cinnabon in the UK.
The closures leave 9 Cinnabon sites still operating in the UK, with the chain having seen a string of closures over the past couple of years. The American chain first came to the UK in January 2021, and now has 11 locations across the UK.
As of now, Cinnabon's UK website appears to be down, just loading an error code. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the beloved bakery chain in the UK.
