Amazon's Kindle device now offers localized Chinese news sources for users in China.
In the world of e-readers, a new contender has emerged, shaking up the landscape in China. A Chinese startup named iKindle has launched a subscription-based service, catering specifically to Chinese-speaking Kindle users. This service, while not officially endorsed by Amazon, fills a void created by the tech giant in China, as it provides Chinese-language content on the Kindle.
The iKindle service is easy to set up on Kindle devices sold in the gray markets in China. However, the availability of the Kindle itself for the average consumer in China remains limited.
Sovan Mandal, a tech enthusiast with an interest in the latest technology and gadgets, including smartphones, tablet devices, AI, and self-driven automobiles, has taken notice of this new development.
iKindle's subscription plans are very affordable, starting with a free plan and increasing to 6 RMB ($0.95) per month for unlimited subscriptions. The service offers access to Chinese language publications, such as The Financial Times and various online news sources.
However, the low costs of iKindle raise questions about piracy and legal implications. There is uncertainty regarding whether iKindle is paying the content providers from whom it draws its news. The loss of advertisement revenue for news providers is also a concern.
Despite these questions, iKindle's service is proving to be a competitive alternative to Amazon's Kindle Store. However, it remains to be seen if prices offered by iKindle will match or surpass those of the iKindle Store.
As the battle for the e-reader market continues, one thing is clear: innovation and competition are driving the industry forward, benefiting consumers in China and beyond.
