Alpine accident aftermath: Assessing the destruction caused by the mountain collapse.
The picturesque village of Blatten, nestled in the Swiss canton of Wallis, was left almost completely buried following a catastrophic landslide on May 28, 2023. The event, which resulted in devastating images spreading across Europe, has triggered a heated debate about whether Blatten should be rebuilt in its original location.
Authorities in Bern have taken immediate action, commissioning the army, disaster protection, and other organisations for a costly evacuation of the 300 inhabitants to safe places. A survey has since been conducted in Switzerland to address this question.
The survey results have shown a divided public opinion. While 42% of those surveyed voted in favour of rebuilding Blatten in the disaster area, 55% are against the idea. The debate is likely to continue to be a contentious issue in Switzerland and the entire Alpine country.
Despite the concerns, the government's determination to restore Blatten within four years is evident. The village square and the original village center are planned to be cleared of rubble and debris by the following year, with the reconstruction projected to take between 3 to 5 years.
To address housing shortages and enable the return of residents, two adjacent undamaged hamlets are planned to be expanded into the new Blatten. However, doubts about the reconstruction's feasibility due to its significant costs for the public persist.
The tragedy in Blatten has been estimated to involve approximately ten million cubic meters of rock, posing a major challenge in the clean-up and rebuilding process. The meltwater and rock debris rushed into the valley below, causing immense damage to the area.
Tragically, a 64-year-old shepherd, who was outside the evacuation zone, was found dead after the tragedy. Despite this loss, the swift action taken by the authorities has ensured the safety of the majority of the villagers.
As the reconstruction efforts continue, the debate about Blatten's future remains a topic of discussion. The landscape of Blatten may change, but the resilience of its people and the determination of the authorities to rebuild remain undeterred.
