Alliance Fails: Union and Greens Suffer Defeat
In a recent survey conducted by Forsa for the RTL media group between November 30 and December 4, 2020, the political landscape in Germany appears to be shifting. The data was collected via email from a sample size of 2,507 respondents.
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), remain the strongest political force in Germany, with 36% support. This marks a slight increase from their previous week's figures.
The Greens, currently led by Robert Habeck, have seen a 1-point decrease in support, now standing at 20%. Habeck himself would currently be chosen by 19% of respondents, a 2-point decrease from the previous week.
The Social Democratic Party (SPD), traditionally one of Germany's major parties, has seen a significant drop in support. Olaf Scholz, the SPD's candidate for Chancellor, would currently only be chosen by 14% of respondents, a 5-point decrease from the party's last federal election result. The combined support for Scholz and Habeck is less than 32%.
Interestingly, if a direct vote for the federal chancellor were held, only 14% would choose Scholz, suggesting that the majority of respondents prefer other candidates.
The most sought-after candidate for Chancellor, if German citizens could directly elect the Chancellor, is currently Friedrich Merz from the CDU. Merz became Chancellor in May 2025 and remains a leading figure in polls despite mixed public opinion about his leadership.
A significant portion of respondents, 32%, would not choose any of the three leaders (SΓΆder, Scholz, Habeck). Seven percent would vote for one of the other parties, while 21% remain undecided or are non-voters, slightly below the 23.8% in the 2017 federal election.
The Left party has 8% support, while the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) both have 6% and 8% support, respectively. No factual information about the support for any political party other than the CSU, SPD, Greens, Left, AfD, and FDP was provided in this survey.
This survey provides a snapshot of the current political landscape in Germany, with the CDU/CSU maintaining their strong position, the Greens experiencing a slight decrease in support, and the SPD seeing a significant drop. The preference for a direct vote for the federal chancellor and the lack of support for the current leaders are also noteworthy findings.
