Improved Travel in London: The Impact of the Silvertown Tunnel

The Silvertown Tunnel, a new addition to London's transport infrastructure, has been making a significant positive impact on the city's traffic flow since its opening on 7th April of this year.

Managed and operated by Transport for London (TfL), the tunnel connects Silvertown with the Greenwich Peninsula, aiming to transform the area into a road user charging zone. Since its opening, unplanned closures at the Blackwall Tunnel have reduced by 39%, providing much-needed relief to London's commuters.

The Silvertown Tunnel has also been instrumental in reducing congestion around the Blackwall Tunnel approaches. Average speeds on the northbound A102 approach during weekday morning peak hours have increased from a sluggish 9mph to a more manageable 30mph.

The tunnel's construction was driven by the need to support economic and population growth in east and south-east London. It was designed to enhance cross-river transport links and has been successful in doing so.

The new data published by TfL shows a 23% reduction in excess waiting time for Londoners using the 108 bus between Stratford International and Lewisham via the Blackwall Tunnel, compared to times before the opening of the Silvertown Tunnel. Peak northbound journey times through the 108 tunnel have reduced by 4.5 minutes overall.

The scheme is also improving journey times for thousands of Londoners, with overall journey times during morning peak hours reducing by 70% since the Silvertown Tunnel was opened.

In addition to improving road travel, the Silvertown Tunnel is encouraging the use of public transport. There has been a 160% boost in journeys being made on the three cross-river zero-emission bus routes.

TfL is committed to monitoring the impact of the tunnels and ensuring the benefits are embedded for long-term improvements for Londoners. They are also working closely to manage additional customers utilising the Woolwich Ferry.

A new initiative, a free cycle shuttle service between North Greenwich and the Royal Docks, is seeing around 125-130 cyclists daily. This scheme is another step towards promoting sustainable travel options in the city.

Total traffic volumes, including those on key corridors such as the A2, A12, and A13, have remained stable. TfL will continue to work to secure long-term improvements for Londoners, including monitoring the impact on other river crossings and traffic along major and local roads in London.

In conclusion, the Silvertown Tunnel is making a tangible difference in London's traffic flow, encouraging sustainable travel, and supporting the city's economic growth.
