Alexandria school authorities call for community engagement on the proposed budget for the year 2027
The budget season is approaching for Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), and the community is invited to participate in the process. ACPS Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt will initiate the budget process for the fiscal year 2027 in September.
The budget process involves seeking input from the public on various topics such as schools, parks, public safety, housing, and transportation. The "Funding Our Future" sessions aim to shape how local resources are spent in ACPS's budget and provide an opportunity for the public to voice their priorities and concerns about the budget.
The "Funding Our Future" sessions are a series of meetings designed to encourage community input. The first session will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at George Washington Middle School's media room, located at 1005 Mount Vernon Avenue, Del Ray. The second session will follow on Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the forum room of Alexandria City High School's Minnie Howard Campus. The third session will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the same time and location as the second session at Minnie Howard.
During these sessions, the public is encouraged to bring their ideas, concerns, and visions for the community. The sessions are open to all, and everyone is welcome to attend, ask questions, and ensure the budget reflects their concerns.
The budget process for FY 2027 includes several key milestones. The draft Combined Funds Budget for FY 2027 will be presented in January. The proposed 2027-2036 Capital Improvement Program budget will be presented in November. The budget adoption for FY 2027 is scheduled for June.
Last year, a budget of $392.3 million was approved for FY 2026 by the Alexandria School Board. The budget process for FY 2027 aims to build upon this foundation, ensuring that ACPS continues to provide quality education to its students while addressing the needs of the community.
The "Funding Our Future" sessions are a crucial part of the budget season preparation for ACPS. They offer a platform for the community to engage with the school board and Superintendent, shaping the budget that will guide ACPS for the next fiscal year.
So, mark your calendars and join the conversation. Your input matters, and your voice can help shape the future of Alexandria City Public Schools.
