Alex Palou accuses McLaren of broken F1 promises in £15.4m court battle
A legal dispute between McLaren and IndyCar champion Alex Palou has reached the UK High Court. The 28-year-old driver testified that the team misled him over a potential Formula 1 seat. His claims centre on McLaren's decision to sign Oscar Piastri instead of honouring his own contract.
Palou, who secured four consecutive IndyCar titles with Chip Ganassi Racing, originally agreed to join McLaren in 2022. But after the team recruited Piastri, he chose to stay in the US series—prompting McLaren to seek £15.4 million in damages for alleged breach of contract.
Palou told the court he felt betrayed when McLaren signed Piastri as a rookie driver. He claimed CEO Zak Brown assured him that Piastri's arrival would not block his own path to F1. According to Palou, Brown later said the decision to hire Piastri came from team principal Andreas Seidl, not himself.
McLaren disputes these claims. Brown denied accusations of 'stringing along' Palou and insisted the driver's involvement was crucial for securing a sponsorship deal with NTT Data. The team also faces separate criticism this season over perceived favouritism between Piastri and Lando Norris.
Palou's contract with McLaren was meant to pave his way into F1. Instead, he remained at Chip Ganassi Racing, where he dominated IndyCar with four straight championships. His success there included multiple race wins and pole positions, reinforcing his status as a top-tier driver.
The case hinges on whether McLaren's actions constituted a breach of agreement. The team argues Palou's refusal to join cost them significant revenue. A ruling could set a precedent for how driver contracts are handled in motorsport.
The High Court will now decide whether McLaren is entitled to £15.4 million in compensation. Palou's testimony suggests he believed his F1 future was secure before Piastri's signing changed the team's plans.
A verdict could impact both Palou's career and McLaren's approach to driver contracts. The outcome may also clarify how sponsorship deals influence team decisions in motorsport.
