Alerts sound for cautious consumers against the practice of shoplifting
The Forsa survey has revealed concerns about door-to-door sales, with almost one in five respondents (19%) admitting to signing a contract in the past 24 months that they did not want in that form. The survey, conducted to gather opinions on door-to-door sales, also shows that 98% of respondents consider this method an unsuitable way to conclude contracts or purchase products.
One of the main reasons given for considering door-to-door sales unsuitable is the feeling of being pressured (33%). Fear of fraud is another significant concern, with 21% of respondents citing this as a reason.
In response to these findings, Germany's top consumer advocate, Klaus Müller, has urged the federal government to protect consumers from harassment and rip-offs in door-to-door sales. Müller suggests that providers may only ring at a consumer's door and offer contracts after prior consent.
Müller also expects Federal Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) to take legal action against door-to-door sales that use questionable methods. The proposals to strengthen the Consumer Protection Authority and extend the cancellation period for door-to-door contracts from 14 to 30 days were made by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection.
Another recommendation by Müller is the strengthening of the right of withdrawal. Providers should no longer be allowed to demand immediate payment at the door for amounts over 50 euros. Furthermore, 46% of respondents advocated extending the withdrawal period for door-to-door contracts from the current 14 days to 30 days.
The survey results highlight the need for reform in door-to-door sales practices. As consumers continue to express their concerns, it is hoped that the federal government will take action to protect them from unwanted contracts and potential fraud.
