Aircraft Model Boeing 737 Slides on Wet Runway at Greven
The Münster-Osnabrück Airport in the Münsterland region experienced a serious disruption on [insert date] when a Boeing 737-800 from Turkey failed to land properly, rolling a short distance beyond the runway's edge.
According to the fire department, the plane landed too late, potentially slipping off the asphalted surface during landing. The exact cause of the incident is initially unclear, but heavy rain was a factor during the landing.
Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident. The nearly 200 people on board were able to leave the plane via the passenger stairs, and passenger buses were used to transport them to the terminal.
Investigations into the incident are being carried out by the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation, who have commissioned the German Weather Service to investigate dangerous shear and crosswinds near the ground, among other things. The decision to land is ultimately up to the pilots, who had received final information about wind direction and speed before landing.
The "black box" (flight data recorder) was secured by the flight authority, with the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder being secured by both the police at Münster-Osnabrück Airport and the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation.
Flight operations at Münster-Osnabrück Airport were suspended for approximately 3.5 hours following the incident. The plane damaged four beacon lights at the end of the runway and stopped just before the end of the asphalted "overrun area," with about 15 to 20 metres to spare.
It is not yet clear whether the pilots of the Boeing 737-800 will be questioned in relation to the incident, but investigations by the Braunschweig authority typically take several months to complete.
The Münster-Osnabrück Airport is located in the area of Greven in the Münsterland region. The airport authority is working closely with the investigating authorities to determine the cause of the incident and ensure the safety of all future flights.
