Aid provided by Bamberg to Mukatschevo, aimed at alleviating human suffering.

In the war-torn region of Transcarpathia, which borders Hungary and Slovakia, the city of Mukachevo finds itself in a precarious situation. Mukachevo, which was on the path to becoming a twin city with Bamberg, Germany, has been hit by Russian air strikes.

The Russian offensive, targeting the western region of Ukraine, has disrupted the normal process of forming twin city relationships. The production site of an electronics manufacturer in Mukachevo, Ukraine, was hit by Russian missile strikes in August 2025, specifically a plant manufacturing Nespresso coffee machines, operated by the company Flex.

The attack on Mukachevo has affected the international relations between Bamberg and Mukachevo. Bamberg's Mayor, Andreas Starke, has expressed shock over the Russian attack on Mukachevo and reports that Bamberg is in direct contact with the local city leadership in Mukachevo.

In response to the civilian population being affected by the Russian attack, Bamberg has offered humanitarian aid, specifically in medical care, to Mukachevo. The fire department and the technical relief agency of Bamberg are involved in the aid offered to Mukachevo. Further coordination between Bamberg and Mukachevo is planned to take place over the weekend.

Sadly, 15 people were injured in Mukachevo as a result of the explosions from the Russian air strikes. The war in Ukraine has resulted in injuries in Transcarpathia, adding to the already dire situation.

The official signing of the partnership certificate between Mukachevo and Bamberg, which was planned before the war, has not occurred due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The ongoing conflict has resulted in additional disruptions to the normal process of forming twin city relationships.

Mukachevo, a city in Transcarpathia, has a potential twin city relationship with Bamberg. Despite the challenges, the hope for a peaceful future and a strong partnership between the two cities remains.
