Aid Fleet in Gaza Targeted by Drone According to Activists

The Global Sumud Flotilla, a coalition of activists aiming to bring aid to the Gaza Strip, has reportedly experienced an incident involving a drone attack on one of their boats. The incident took place on a boat sailing under the Portuguese flag, which is part of the flotilla.

The boat, known as the "Family Boat," is said to be carrying climate activist Greta Thunberg, along with Yasemin Acar and Thiago Avila. The authenticity of the videos documenting the incident, which show a fireball crashing onto the boat, causing damage to the main deck and cargo hold, cannot be verified.

Reports suggest that all six passengers and crew members on the boat are safe, and no casualties or material damage were reported, although several life jackets were burnt. The Tunisian authorities have denied the drone attack claim, attributing the incident to a fire caused by a burning life jacket.

The Global Sumud Flotilla set sail from Barcelona at the beginning of September and is currently the largest action of its kind. The flotilla is part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, an international movement that has consistently faced challenges in attempting to break the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip by Israel.

In May, activists of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition reported a drone attack near the Mediterranean island of Malta. Organizers of the Global Sumud Flotilla have stated that aggressions aimed at intimidating them and hindering their mission will not deter them. They plan to provide more information about the reported incident at a press conference today.

The investigation into the boat fire was conducted by specialized security units, and the Tunisian interior ministry, as reported by TAP, attributes the boat fire to a burning life jacket. However, the incident has raised concerns about the safety and freedom of activists attempting to bring aid to the Gaza Strip.

The Global Sumud Flotilla boats are sailing under various flags, including the Portuguese, reflecting the international support for their cause. As the flotilla continues its journey, the focus remains on the mission to deliver aid to the people of Gaza and the ongoing challenges they face.
