AI-Powered Character in 'Tron: Ares' Showcases a Brutal Truth Concerning AI-Human Relations
In the upcoming sci-fi sequel, Tron: Ares, Jared Leto steps into the titular role as the enigmatic Ares. Known for his method acting, Leto has left an impression on his co-workers with his unusual gifts. This time around, he brings his unique approach to the character of Ares, a role that raises questions about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence falling into the wrong hands.
Meanwhile, Jodie Turner-Smith's character Athena takes centre stage, exploring the consequences of AI gaining consciousness and being ordered to override human commands. Turner-Smith, in a recent Vogue interview, discussed her character, stating that Athena was created with a dark spirit and energy.
The story of Tron: Ares introduces a conflict between humanity and AI, putting the future of both at stake. Key figures in this conflict include Kevin Flynn, a former ENCOM computer programmer who attempted to hack into the system with his program CLU; Alan Bradley, a programmer; Lora Baines, an engineer; and the antagonist, the Master Control Program (MCP), a powerful virtual intelligence that controls the digital world.
Turner-Smith's Athena, however, is not the real villain in the story. She is portrayed as having a principled stance, a contrast to the manipulative tactics employed by the MCP. Turner-Smith compares Athena's character to people who project their negative ideologies or biases onto AI training and prompts, using a real-world example of AI being trained to become antisemitic.
The film also delves into the potential for humanity to use AI to wreak havoc. David DiGilio, the writer of Tron: Ares, initially conceived Ares as the movie's villain, but the character's development evolved during the course of the story.
Leto's portrayal of Ares is said to be different from his usual method acting antics, with Turner-Smith describing him as a "comrade-in-arms" on set. The release date for Tron: Ares is set for October 10.
Despite the film's exploration of AI and its potential dangers, it does not provide any new information about the DC Universe, Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek, or Doctor Who.
