In a significant shift, technology company Anthropic has revised its hiring policy to permit job applicants to use AI for refining application materials. This move comes as more and more companies, such as Commerzbank, Oracle, Siemens, Verizon, KPMG, Eventbrite, and Progressive, are increasingly using AI technologies to manage large volumes of applications, expedite the hiring timeline, and enhance the precision of hiring decisions.

Anthropic, a $61.5 billion tech giant, has been using AI, represented by Claude, for generating job descriptions, enhancing interview questions, and managing candidate communications. The company's rationale for this policy shift is rooted in its internal practices, stating that it uses AI daily and seeks candidates who excel at collaborating with AI.

Jimmy Gould, Anthropic's head of talent, commented on LinkedIn that this change is intentional and requires careful consideration around fairness and bias. The company invites applicants to use its AI, Claude, to demonstrate their unique perspectives, skills, and experiences.

However, the policy is not without limitations. Applicants are required to compose the initial drafts of their resumes, cover letters, and responses to application questions independently. No AI assistance is allowed during live interviews, unless specific authorization is provided. During take-home assessments, AI usage is permitted only when explicit instructions allow it.

The use of AI in job applications has been a topic of discussion, with approximately 57% of applicants employing OpenAI's ChatGPT in their job applications, according to data from consulting firm Neurosight. On the other hand, a 2023 report by StandOut CV revealed that around 73% of Americans stated they would consider using AI tools in 2024 to assist in embellishing or potentially misrepresenting information on their resumes.

Anthropic's policy concerning AI usage in hiring will undergo regular review and updates "to reflect evolving AI capabilities." The company is experimenting, testing, and being transparent about its approach to deploying AI in hiring, aiming to level the playing field for applicants.

Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs prohibits the use of external sources, including ChatGPT or Google search engine, during the interview process for its private investing academy in EMEA. There is no mention of hackers using ChatGPT to fake resumes in the provided context.

In this reciprocal application of AI, candidates can utilize AI to conduct research on Anthropic, practice interview responses, and formulate questions for the interviewer. AI can also be used by candidates to build, update, or improve their resumes, as indicated by a 2024 report from Canva, where nearly half of job seekers utilized generative AI for this purpose.

As the role of AI in recruitment processes continues to evolve, Anthropic's transparent approach to AI adoption could set a precedent for other tech companies in the industry.
