The Lake Constance Cycle Route, a flagship of European cycle tourism that connects Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, is set to undergo a significant transformation. The business office of the cycle route, based at the International Lake Constance Tourism GmbH (ILCT), will coordinate this quality management initiative.

The close cooperation of municipalities and international bodies aims to make the cycle route more attractive and safe. This collaborative effort is a crucial step towards further uniting the region.

The initiative, dubbed the Quality Pact for the Lake Constance Cycle Path, was initiated by the cycle path office and supported by the Nahverkehrsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (NVBW) on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport. Key advocates and facilitators in this process include Minister Winfried Hermann, who played a pivotal role in its inception.

The city of Meersburg, a significant contributor to the cycle route's success, consistently advocates for its maintenance, further development, and good accessibility. Mayor Robert Scherer emphasised the route's importance, stating it is one of the most important tourist and cultural axes in the region, offering safety, a nature experience, a climate-friendly alternative to car traffic, and significantly contributes to regional value creation.

Nina Hanstein, Managing Director of ILCT, emphasised the international tourist significance of the cycle route. She highlighted that it is part of the RadNETZ BW and forms the backbone of cycling around Lake Constance. The route is also an ADFC quality cycle route and should continue to meet the high standards of a national cycle route.

The government official from the canton of Thurgau, Dominik Diezi, stated that the Lake Constance cycle path is of central importance to all riparian states and should be developed sustainably. He emphasised the need for demand-oriented improvements on the cycle path to maintain and further strengthen its attractiveness.

The Lake Constance cycle path enables citizens quick, direct daily connections and offers tourists a varied cycling tour along the lake. With the commitments to cross-border, coordinated quality development, an important step has been taken to further unite the region.

In June 2025, the countries and cantons around Lake Constance committed to a coordinated further development of the cycle route. This type of coordinated approach can serve as a model for the quality management of other national long-distance cycle routes.

A quality pact has been signed by the municipalities on the Lake Constance cycle path, districts of Lake Constance and Konstanz, government districts of Tübingen and Freiburg, to implement coordinated improvements on the cycle path. Continuous improvements are needed on the cycle path, including separation from motor vehicle traffic, removal of bottlenecks, better signage, and measures to increase traffic safety.

The Press Office and Contact Form are available for the Ministry of Transport for any queries or updates regarding the Quality Pact for the Lake Constance Cycle Path. The ILCT continues to support the joint quality development of the cycle route, ensuring its continued success and growth as a key tourist and cultural axis in the region.
