After a comprehensive shutdown: inebriated motorist removed from road traffic control
Wrong-Way Driver on A3 Highway Under Investigation
In an alarming incident that occurred on the A3 highway in Luxembourg on August 25, 2025, a 54-year-old driver was temporarily detained after driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver, operating a 3.5-ton Sprinter, was found to be ignoring all stop signals, including flashing lights and sirens, and was traveling in the opposite lane, potentially heading towards a collision with vehicles traveling in the correct direction.
Officers from the South East Hesse Highway Police Station were alerted and rushed to the scene. A patrol car pursued the Sprinter and managed to stop it by performing a controlled braking maneuver and positioning their patrol car in front of the Sprinter. The driver was taken into police custody to sober up.
A breathalyzer test revealed a reading of 1.68 per thousand for the driver, well above the legal limit. A blood sample was also taken from the driver for further analysis. As far as is known, there were no personal or material damages.
The highway was monitored from both the Seligenstadt interchange in the direction of Frankfurt and the Hanau interchange in the opposite direction. The highway was fully closed for approximately 15 minutes due to the operation.
Road users who were endangered by the wrong-way driver are asked to contact the South East Hesse Highway Police Station. The police are investigating the driver on suspicion of endangering road traffic due to alcohol-induced impairment, as well as a drug driving ban.
Witnesses reported that the driver turned around and started traveling correctly towards Frankfurt, but then turned back towards Würzburg as a wrong-way driver.
