Afroman triumphs in defamation case, joins Bitcoin 2026 as free speech advocate
Rapper Afroman has won a high-profile legal battle against seven Ohio deputy sheriffs who sued him for defamation. The case, which ended in his favour earlier this month, centred on his use of raid footage in music videos and social media posts. Now, he is set to appear as a featured speaker at Bitcoin 2026, an event celebrating free speech and artistic expression.
His iconic American flag suit, worn during the trial, will also be displayed at the conference's art gallery before going to auction.
The legal dispute began after a botched 2022 raid on Afroman's home. The officers later sued him for $3.9 million, claiming privacy violations over his use of the footage in creative work. In March 2026, an Adams County jury fully acquitted the rapper after a three-day trial, upholding First Amendment protections. The ACLU supported his defence, labelling the lawsuit a SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) case.
Known for his 2001 hit *Because I Got High*, Afroman will now speak at Bitcoin 2026, taking place April 27-29 at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas. The event, organised by BTC Inc, expects over 30,000 attendees and will feature more than 500 speakers. CEO Brandon Green described Bitcoin as a movement defending the right to speak, build, and live freely—values Afroman's legal fight embodies. The rapper's American flag suit, a symbol of his courtroom battle, will be part of the *Relics of a Revolution* exhibition at the Bitcoin Conference Art Gallery. The piece explores protest art in Bitcoin's history and will later be auctioned via Scarce.city, with a preview available at the Bitcoin Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG).
The jury's decision reaffirmed protections for artistic criticism of law enforcement. Afroman's upcoming appearance at Bitcoin 2026 ties his legal victory to broader discussions on free expression and resistance to censorship. His suit, now part of a protest art collection, will remain a visible reminder of the case's significance.
