Affordable Electric Vehicles from China Are Dominantly Outperforming Legacy Brands in a Competition That Some Traditional Companies seem to be Overlooking
The automotive landscape in the UK is witnessing a significant shift, with Chinese brands making a strong presence in the affordable electric vehicle (EV) market. According to a recent study published by the FIA Foundation, small, budget-friendly EVs from China are on the rise, pushing European and British manufacturers to focus on larger and more premium models.
China, once a net importer of passenger cars, has now evolved into the world's largest net exporter. The country now accounts for 27% of global passenger car sales, a testament to its rapid growth in the automotive sector. This surge is particularly evident in the EV market, where Chinese automakers have dominated in less than a decade.
The study highlights the competitive edge China holds in manufacturing smaller EVs. Strengths in battery supply chains, manufacturing efficiency, and software development have contributed to this success. As a result, more than 130 EV models are now available in the UK, and over a third of them are priced under £30,000 ($40,200).
Brands like MG, BYD, Omoda, and Jaecoo are becoming increasingly common in the UK market. In June 2022 alone, approximately 19,000 of the new cars sold in the UK were made by Chinese brands. This rise could help combat the swelling size of new vehicles in the UK, as smaller EVs offer a more sustainable and economical alternative.
The UK government is also supporting this shift towards EVs. The Department of Transport offers discounts of up to £3,750 ($5,025) for new electric cars. Furthermore, more than 100,000 additional public charging locations are in the works, making it easier for drivers to transition to electric vehicles.
Steve Gooding, the chief executive of the RAC Foundation, has suggested a potential resurgence of small cars in the UK market. With the growing availability of affordable and efficient EVs, it seems that the future of transportation in the UK may be smaller and greener than ever before.
