Affordable Chery SUVs now undercut Volkswagen offerings in the UK, starting at £20,000.
Chinese Car Maker Chery Launches New SUV Brand in the UK, Targeting Volkswagen
Chinese automaker Chery is making its mark in the UK market with the launch of a new SUV brand, aiming to compete with Volkswagen. The brand, named Chery, has already sold nearly 20,000 cars of its Omoda and Jaecoo brands in the UK this year.
The initial offerings from Chery will be the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 SUVs. The Tiggo 7, a family SUV, is the UK's cheapest plug-in hybrid, priced at £29,995. On the other hand, the Tiggo 7's petrol version is priced at £24,995, making it £5000 cheaper than the plug-in hybrid version. The Tiggo 4, another petrol-only model, is expected to launch next, priced around £20,000.
The Tiggo 9, a larger SUV than the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8, will also be introduced. A range-topping Tiggo 9 SUV will launch, priced over £40,000 and featuring a PHEV drivetrain. The Tiggo 9 will compete with larger SUVs in the UK market.
The launch event for the Chery brand took place at the O2 in London, where the Tiggo 4, Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8, and Tiggo 9 were on display. The first cars from the initial 25 dealerships will be with customers by the end of September.
Chery started out as an engine maker in China in 1997 and made its first car in 1999. The company plans to offer a full range of powertrains, including electric, in addition to its initial petrol and PHEV offerings.
The Tiggo name is applied to SUVs in the Chery range. The Tiggo 7 competes with the Volkswagen Tiguan in the UK market. The Tiggo 8 is billed as the UK's cheapest full-sized seven-seater, with a starting price of just over £28,500 for the petrol version. A plug-in hybrid version of the Tiggo 8 will cost an additional £5000.
At present, Chery does not see a market for smaller models in the UK. However, with the success of the Tiggo range, it remains to be seen if the company will expand its offering in the future. As of now, the focus is on the Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8, and Tiggo 9 SUVs.
