Affecting Your Urban Environment
In the vibrant city of Augsburg, various community projects are enriching the lives of its residents and promoting intercultural understanding. Here are some of the initiatives that stand out.
The Stadtteilmütter project serves as an important link between family and educational institutions, building intercultural bridges and fostering a sense of community. More information about this project can be found on their subpage.
The MehrGenerationenTreffpunkte (MGT) have been a staple in Augsburg's districts for many years, working towards more togetherness among generations, organizations, institutions, and cultures. MGT achieves its goals through diverse offers and actions.
One such action is the involvement of 8th graders in volunteering during certain events at local aid organizations. This not only provides valuable assistance but also instills a sense of community responsibility in the younger generation.
Another notable project is the Russian-speaking telephone of concern, an integration initiative for Russian-speaking migrants in the city. Confidential and free of charge, this service offers help with orientation in German society.
The 25th World Volunteer Conference 2018 saw the creation of a unique addition to Augsburg's landscape - a walkable labyrinth in Wittelsbach Park. Designed with used red clay bricks and stones individually designed by participants, the labyrinth is a symbol of civic togetherness and the worldwide communal effort for the realization of sustainable goals for a better future. Opportunities for volunteering to maintain or participate in the labyrinth are available.
The labyrinth, with a diameter of about 13 meters, was built by the apprentice group of the office for green order, nature conservation and cemetery affairs. It is located in the middle of Wittelsbach Park and is open for visitors to look at and walk through.
Volunteerism is a cornerstone of Augsburg's community, with over 100 ways to volunteer in the areas of culture, social, economy, and sports available. The Modular Festival, organised by the city youth ring Augsburg, is just one example of the city's vibrant cultural scene.
The city library in Augsburg also relies on volunteers to support its ongoing operation.
Integration ambassadors are available to help anonymously and confidentially, offering assistance with orientation in German society.
The organisations supporting the project "Augsburg hilft!" include more than 2,000 registered voluntary helpers from Augsburg who assist individuals, institutions, and clubs as needed, often organised through initiatives led by the Freiwilligen-Zentrum Augsburg. This group, consisting of ASB, BRK, DLRG, Die Johanniter, and Malteser, work together to provide aid and support to those in need.
The labyrinth, as a meditation on the path of life and oneself, connects all cultures and world religions, emphasizing the universal nature of community and cooperation. It serves as a reminder that, in Augsburg, everyone has a role to play in building a better future.
