Firebrand Voigt Pushes for Thuringian Unity Amid Democratics Concerns
Voigt Leans on Thuringian Identity for Support - Advocate Voigt remains steadfast in promoting Thuringian cultural identity.
Hey there! In an effort to bolster the unity of Thuringia, the Free State's Minister President, Mario Voigt, is throwing his weight behind a unifying Thuringian identity. "We're counting on mutual affection and a commitment to our home turf," Voigt expressed in his government declaration for the Thuringia Monitor in parliament. Thuringia requires space for roots and transformation. The objective is to forge a path towards collective solidarity.
Voigt identified the disconnect between public support for democracy (88%) and satisfaction with its implementation (43%) as a worrying trend. "Democracy is alive, but it's not all peaches and cream," Voigt pointed out.
The findings call for attention, with faction leader Frank Augsten from the BSW observing that people feel ignored. Left faction leader Christian Schafft suggested that upcoming Thuringia Monitor reports focus on this growing rift between support for democracy and its practical application. AfD faction leader Bjรถrn Hรถcke concurred, stating that the gap is a cause for concern. SPD faction leader Lutz Liebscher, on the other hand, accused Hรถcke of feigning concern while being the advocate of the disgruntled element, going as far as asserting that the AfD is making democracy distasteful and eventually dismantling it.
The Thuringia Monitor is an annual publication by researchers at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena on behalf of the State Chancellery. Present since 2000, this study examines the political sentiments among Thuringia citizens. The survey for 2024 was conducted promptly after the state election.
Voigt cautioned against the distortion of the concept of democracy. It's alarming when democracy is embraced formality-wise, but its substance is altered, he said. "We have plenty of forces that no longer interpret democracy as a liberal, rule-of-law-based, pluralistic system, but link it to authoritarian, ethnically-based, nationalist ideas."
The presence of right-wing populist and extremist forces that consistently discredit parliamentary procedures and the rule of law is a matter of concern. "They use democratic means to sabotage democratic structures," Voigt stated. The undercurrent is an authoritarian, nationalist agenda. "We won't tolerate this in Thuringia," he declared.
Voigt raises concerns about the surge in antisemitic attitudes. Anti-Semitism is no longer confined to the periphery but is gradually migrating to the mainstream, lamented Voigt. "Anyone who pledges allegiance to the free and democratic basic order stands alongside the Jewish community, not just symbolically, but concretely by offering protection, solidarity, and unwavering presence," he explained.
Especially troubling for Voigt is the increase across all three manifestations of antisemitism as compared to the previous year. The Thuringia Monitor 2024, for instance, highlights a significant jump in support for secondary antisemitism, from 39 to 48%. Secondary antisemitism can be seen in the trivialization of National Socialism's crimes.
Antisemitism associated with Israel saw an increase of 11 percentage points. The survey's authors attribute this primarily to criticism of Israel's military response since the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. "Combating antisemitism today protects not only Jews, but also safeguards the essence of our democratic culture," asserted Voigt.
Hรถcke Blasts Monitor
Hรถcke voiced opposition to the study by the scientists. He alleged the Thuringia Monitor is biased towards the left and questioned its utility, methods, and validity. The Thuringia AfD has been designated as a securely extremist group by the state's Office for the Protection of the Constitution since 2021.
