Advancements in Heating Technology: A Look Ahead at The Coming Era of Energy Efficient Heating Systems
Detmold, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, is embarking on an ambitious journey towards climate neutrality by 2035. A key factor in this endeavour is the sustainable conversion of heat supply, and to that end, the city has developed a new municipal heat planning.
The heat planning is a living process, designed to be developed in close collaboration with the city society. This initiative aims to provide an orientation for climate-friendly and reliable heat solutions for all citizens. The plan is now available online, along with a results report, and a press release about the heat planning can be found on the city portal.
Heating contributes to 40 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in Detmold, making it a critical area of focus. The municipal heat planning provides citizens with a tool to assess their personal heating options based on the city's climate goals.
Priority district heating expansion areas in Detmold include the city centre, Hiddesen-Mitte, parts of Spork-Eichholz, and Jerxen-Orbke. In other areas, a switch to emission-free heating is recommended at the next opportunity. In further zones, a possible district heating expansion in the long term is sensible if technical and economic prerequisites are met.
Citizens with buildings in the test areas are encouraged to contact Stadtwerke Detmold for more information. For questions about the heat planning in general, the city portal at kwp@our website is available.
An information event for citizens will take place on 02.09.2025 in the large festival hall of the Detmolder Stadthalle from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. under the title "Which heat for my house?" This event is in cooperation with NRW.Energy4Climate.
The municipal heat planning was developed with financial support from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection between December 2023 and December 2024. The planning will be continuously refined and updated by 2030 at the latest to ensure it remains relevant and effective in helping Detmold achieve its climate neutrality goals.
On the municipal climate portal at klima.our website/klimaschutz/waermeplan, citizens can find information on tips, map views, and background information related to the heat planning. This portal serves as a valuable resource for those interested in learning more about the plan and how they can contribute to Detmold's journey towards climate neutrality.
