Adding an expansion card enables upgrading your system with an additional 512GB of DDR5 memory via the PCIe slot, specifically designed using CXL 2.0 AIC and compatible with TRX50 and W790 workstation motherboards.

Gigabyte has expanded its lineup with the introduction of the AI Top CXL R5X4, a specialized add-in card (AIC) designed to increase the memory capacity of its TRX50 AI Top and W790 AI Top motherboards.

The AI Top CXL R5X4 slots into a regular PCIe 5.0 x16 expansion slot and measures 4.7 x 10 inches (12 x 25.4 cm). It communicates with the system using the CXL 2.0/1.1 protocol and requires a motherboard with at least the AMD TRX50 or Intel W790 chipset.

The AIC features a 16-layer HDI PCB and is cooled with the CXL Thermal Armor and an AIO fan for active cooling. Each slot supports up to 128GB, resulting in a total memory capacity of 512GB on the AI Top CXL R5X4. The card uses a standard 8-pin EXT12V power connector, and Gigabyte has included a power connector indicator LED beside the power connector for easy identification.

The AI Top CXL R5X4 has four DDR5 memory slots that support RDIMMs, allowing for custom memory configuration and future upgrades. The QVL for the AI Top CXL R5X4 shows support for DDR5 memory kits with data rates up to DDR5-6800.

As of the current information, the release date and price for the AI Top CXL R5X4 are not disclosed. However, users can stay updated on news, reviews, and analysis by following Tom's Hardware. It's worth noting that Gigabyte is not the only company focusing on expanding memory capacity for workstation motherboards. Companies such as HP and MSI have developed products to support high-capacity DDR4 and DDR5 ECC registered DIMMs. For instance, HP Z Workstations and MSI motherboards optimized for high-performance processors can support up to 1TB RAM.

While the AI Top CXL R5X4 is specifically advertised for Gigabyte's TRX50 AI Top and W790 AI Top motherboards, it may work on any motherboard with PCIe 5.0 and CXL support.
