Actor Riz Ahmed disclosed he endured a severe and prolonged illness during the filming of 'Rogue One'
In a turn of events that tested his resilience, Riz Ahmed found himself uncertain about the future during a prolonged illness. This health crisis occurred during the filming of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but it was another role that would ultimately help him find solace.
Fast forward to today, Ahmed can be seen on the big screen in Relay, opposite Lily James, currently playing in theaters. However, it was his role in the 2019 movie Sound of Metal that truly resonated with him, thanks to his personal experiences.
Ahmed described the connection as a deep kind of grief, fear, terror, but also liberation, gratitude, and acceptance. It was during this illness that he had a moment of "trippy clarity" – a realisation that everything he has is a gift.
The illness led Ahmed to connect with the script for Sound of Metal, for which he received an Academy Award nomination. After recovering, he had to recreate his strength to portray his character with the same intensity.
Despite the challenges, Ahmed felt the most grateful, at peace, and content when he felt like he was going to lose his whole life. This profound emotion is evident in his powerful performance in Sound of Metal.
Currently, Ahmed is at the Telluride Film Festival for Hamlet, a modern reimagining of the seminal William Shakespeare play set in London. Hamlet will have its world premiere tomorrow at the festival. However, there is no new information about Ahmed's current health status or any new awards or nominations for either Relay or Hamlet.
Ahmed stated that the story he needed found him at the right time in relation to Sound of Metal. His health issues helped him resonate with the screenplay, making his portrayal of a struggling musician particularly poignant. Despite the hardships, Ahmed's journey serves as a testament to his strength and determination.
