Acknowledging the persistent issues of racism and problematic practices tied to Lululemon and its founder needs immediate attention

In the world of athletic apparel, few brands have made a name for themselves quite like lululemon. Founded by Chip Wilson in 1998, the company has grown to become the seventh largest apparel company globally, according to Forbes.

Wilson's vision was to create a brand that fused athleticism with premium quality. The name "lululemon," while its origin remains unclear, was chosen partly due to its potential appeal to Japanese consumers, who might find its pronunciation challenging. The logo, a stylized human figure in a yoga pose, symbolizes well-being and high-performance athletic wear.

Lululemon's stores feature minimalist displays, thoughtfully curated products, and high price points. The brand pioneered a new category of apparel, combining workout functionality with a premium streetwear look. They also developed proprietary fabric technologies and built a strong community and brand ambassador strategy.

However, Wilson's public persona has been marked by controversy. Over the years, he has made tactless remarks about the brand he founded, even in recent interviews. This has included criticisms of lululemon's current focus on diversity and inclusion, stating that they are trying to become like the Gap.

His controversial comments reached a peak in December 2013, when he resigned as chairman of lululemon's board of directors after making controversial comments about customers' bodies. This incident led to a 404 error on the link to a National Post Business Magazine article about lululemon's product innovation and marketing on the company's website.

Despite his departure, Wilson's legacy and ideas continue to influence lululemon. His daughter, Lily-Rose, is currently receiving controversial reviews for her role in The Idol. Meanwhile, Wilson is involved in various business ventures related to athletic and technical apparel, aiming to transform brands like Salomon into more stylish, seasonless, and everyday wear for women.

Wilson has also set up an organization, Solve FSHD, to stamp out facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy by 2027. His website, separate from lululemon, features excerpts from his book The Story of lululemon and a FAQ page.

Lululemon's problematic past is largely associated with Wilson's actions and comments. However, the brand has grown into a global leader in athleisure, continuing to innovate and push boundaries in the world of athletic apparel. Wilson's legacy, while marked by controversy, has undeniably played a significant role in shaping the brand that is lululemon.
