On a fateful afternoon on June 26, 2025, the A57 highway near Krefeld was the scene of a significant incident. The events unfolded at around 13:04, when the Voluntary Fire Department Alpen received a call about a potential spill of hazardous materials on the highway.
The initial report suggested that seven vehicles were involved in two separate accidents on the A57. The first accident involved four cars and a truck, while a third car was also involved in the initial accident. In the resulting traffic jam, a second accident occurred, involving two cars.
The Voluntary Fire Department Alpen, along with the Voluntary Fire Department Veen, responded promptly to the scene. The highway was completely closed, and traffic was rerouted by the police to ensure the safety of motorists.
Upon arrival, the fire departments found approximately 50 square meters of the roadway contaminated with hazardous materials. A specialized company, GSG (Gefahrstoff Spezialisten GmbH), was called in to clean the roadway.
The incident resulted in several injuries. Five injured persons, including two children, were treated at the scene. Two additional persons were treated by the fire department's deployment forces.
The Voluntary Fire Department Alpen completed their tasks on the A57 after approximately three hours, having successfully contained the situation and cleared the roadway. The highway was reopened, and normal traffic resumed.
The incident was given the call sign CBRN2, indicating a potential threat involving chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear hazards. Despite the seriousness of the situation, the quick and coordinated response by the emergency services ensured that the incident was managed effectively, minimising further risk and disruption.
