Accelerated verification processes may be implemented within a few weeks' time
Republican senators are considering a significant overhaul of Senate rules to expedite the confirmation of President Donald Trump's stalled nominees. The proposed changes, which are being refined by GOP senators, could see the use of the "nuclear option" to alter the chamber's rules for quicker confirmations.
On Wednesday, senators met behind closed doors to discuss proposals for a party-line overhaul of presidential nomination handling. This was the first in-person meeting of GOP senators since frustration about the slow pace of confirmations boiled over earlier this summer.
The proposed changes, if enacted, would not apply to nominees for Cabinet-level positions, the Supreme Court, or courts of appeals. However, the plan is being extended to include nominees to federal district courts, marking the first time such a change is being discussed specifically for these nominees.
One of the key proposals is to allow multiple nominees to be confirmed with a single vote. This move is intended to speed up the confirmation process for President Trump's nominees.
Republicans are still deliberating on whether to include nominees to federal district courts in the proposed change, and a final consensus has not yet been reached.
The plan to enact the change in Senate rules is expected to be implemented before the scheduled weeklong break starting on Sept. 22. It is important to note that specific names of the senators involved and their detailed positions are not yet publicly disclosed.
This potential change in Senate rules comes at a time when President Trump's administration has faced criticism for the slow pace of confirmations, with many key positions remaining vacant. The proposed changes aim to address this issue and ensure a smoother confirmation process for the President's nominees.
