Argentina Poised to Become Global Mining Powerhouse

Argentina is on track to transform into a global mining powerhouse, particularly in the production of lithium, copper, gold, and silver. The South American country produced approximately 70,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate in 2024, making it the world's third-largest lithium producer with potential to climb rankings in the coming years.

The country's rich mineral reserves are a significant factor in this growth. Argentina holds 116 million tonnes of copper resources and 17.1 million tonnes in proven reserves, making it a key player in the region that holds about 70% of the world's copper reserves. The country's main copper deposits are located in the Andes near the borders with Chile and Bolivia.

Argentina's lithium deposits are primarily concentrated in the Northwest region (NOA), encompassing the provinces of Catamarca, Salta, and Jujuy. The most relevant lithium projects include Cauchari-Olaroz, Centenario-Ratones, Olaroz, Fénix, and Sal de Oro.

In the gold sector, Argentina currently ranks as the world's thirteenth largest gold producer, with an annual production of approximately 53 tonnes. The country boasts impressive silver resources totaling 3,839.5 million ounces and proven reserves of 492.7 million ounces, placing Argentina among the top ten global producers of silver.

The National Ministry of Mining uses international standards to classify mineral resources. The Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI) has significantly improved conditions for mining project development in Argentina, attracting investment and boosting the sector's growth.

Over 47% of social media comments about mining are positive, while negative mentions are steadily declining. This positive sentiment, combined with the country's abundant mineral reserves, positions Argentina to become one of the ten largest global producers of copper by 2030, with exports potentially exceeding $5 billion annually by that year.

Argentina could quadruple its mining exports by 2030, reaching $18.6 billion annually, mainly driven by lithium and copper. The country could become the world's second-largest lithium producer in the medium term, with exports potentially exceeding $12 billion by 2030.

The uranium market dynamics are currently enhancing the strategic value of Argentina's deposits, with the main uranium projects being Amarillo Grande, Cerro Solo, Sierra Pintada, Laguna Salada, and Meseta Central.

Mining currently represents 4% of national exports, with $4.633 billion exported in 2024. The sector is expected to close 2025 above $5 billion, marking a historic record with 14% year-on-year growth. Argentina was the sixth global destination for mining exploration investment in 2024.

The mining sector's growth is set to continue, with Argentina's potential to become a global leader in the production of strategic minerals. The country's rich mineral reserves, favourable investment conditions, and positive public sentiment make it an attractive destination for mining projects and investments.
