AbbVie to Increase North Chicago Manufacturing Site with $195 Million Investment
In a significant move, pharmaceutical giant AbbVie has announced plans to invest $195 million in expanding its manufacturing plant in North Chicago. The expansion, which is part of a larger commitment by the company to invest more than $10 billion in U.S. capital over the next decade, was announced by Robert A. Michael, the CEO of AbbVie.
The expansion will primarily focus on the API production site in North Chicago and is expected to be fully operational by 2027. This move aims to enhance AbbVie's chemical synthesis capabilities in the U.S., enabling the company to deliver next-generation medicines that make a remarkable impact on patients' lives.
The new facility will support the domestic production of neuroscience, immunology, and oncology medicines, including Epkinly (epcoritamab), a second-line combination therapy for relapsed or refractory (r/r) follicular lymphoma (FL). Recent clinical trials conducted by Genmab and AbbVie have shown that Epkinly had met its dual primary endpoints.
Robert Michael, who also serves as the chairman of AbbVie, stated that this expansion is an important step to maintain U.S. leadership in pharmaceutical innovation. He further emphasised that the expansion will create more jobs, not only within AbbVie but also through its supplier networks.
Currently, AbbVie employs more than 6,000 people across 11 sites in the U.S. The company's commitment to the U.S. is evident, as it plans to expand production of API, drug product, peptides, and medical devices in the country over the next decade.
Construction on the new API facility in North Chicago is set to begin this autumn. This expansion of AbbVie's manufacturing presence in the U.S. is expected to contribute positively to the pharmaceutical industry and the economy as a whole.
