A Valentine's service in Germany celebrates love through symbolic stones and shared reflections

A special Valentine's service took place on Saturday at St. Albanus fortified church in Kaltensundheim. The event drew around 50 visitors for a belated celebration of love, held weeks after the traditional February 14 date. Organisers prepared a warm welcome with food, drinks, and a thoughtful programme centred on connections and renewal.

The service began with each guest receiving an unpolished stone, symbolising life's rough moments. Community educator Heike Straube led the congregation in reflecting on these stones, encouraging them to rediscover warmth and radiance in their relationships. Her sermon tied into the Gospel reading from Matthew 5:14–16, which reminded attendees they are 'the light of the world.'

As part of the ceremony, participants exchanged their rough stones for polished ones, representing hope and transformation. Straube also emphasised that love exists beyond a single day, reinforcing the idea that care and connections matter year-round.

A musical programme featuring local artists added to the evening's atmosphere. After the service, church elders hosted a buffet with appetisers, mulled wine, sparkling wine, and non-alcoholic drinks, giving guests time to mingle and share their experiences.

The event brought together around 50 people to celebrate love in its many forms. Through symbolic gestures, music, and shared reflection, the service offered a moment of renewal for the community. The polished stones taken home served as a lasting reminder of the evening's message.
