"A significant number of watercrafts, accompanied by Greta Thunberg and members of the LFI party, set sail for Gaza this Sunday. Here's what we currently understand about the new convoy."
The Global Sumud Flotilla, an independent humanitarian aid fleet, has set sail from various Mediterranean ports, including Spain and Tunisia, with the aim of delivering aid, medicine, and survival supplies to the people of Gaza. This effort comes as the Israeli offensive in the region has been ongoing since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
The flotilla is not affiliated with any government or political party and is funded through online crowdfunding, having raised over 2.28 million euros so far. The operation is coordinated by the Freedom Flotilla coalition, which plays an advisory and expertise role, and brings together the main civilian humanitarian movements to Gaza, such as the Global March to Gaza, Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, and Sumud Nusantara.
The crew members of these ships, including media activists from various countries and European MPs like Rima Hassan (LFI, France) and Emma Fourreau (La France insoumise), have faced expulsion and brief detention.
Swedish activist Greta Thunberg is among those joining the flotilla for a second time. Notable personalities like Swedish actor Gustaf Skarsgård, known for his role as Floki in the series Vikings, and Irish actor Liam Cunningham, known for his role in Game of Thrones, are also expected to be on board.
The Israeli authorities have been accused of limiting the entry of humanitarian aid at maritime and land borders, leading to distress for 500,000 people in Gaza. The UN considers these figures to be reliable, stating that Gaza is facing an inevitable and cruel famine.
Israel is preparing for a major offensive on the city of Gaza in September, which only heightens the urgency of the humanitarian aid mission. The ships of the Global Sumud Flotilla began setting sail from late August 2025, departing from ports including Malaysia, Genoa, Barcelona, Catania, Syros, and Tunis.
The flotilla aims to meet at sea and then head towards Gaza, marking the largest attempt ever made to break the illegal Israeli blockade of Gaza. A live video will be launched on social media at 12 PM on the day the ships depart, and several rallies will be organized in French cities, including Marseille and Rennes.
As the Global Sumud Flotilla navigates towards Gaza, it serves as a powerful symbol of hope and solidarity for the people of Gaza, who continue to endure hardships under the ongoing Israeli blockade.
