A significant number of iPhone users are expected to abandon the iPhone 17 in favor of foldable models, a development that seems predictable to me
The tech world is abuzz with anticipation as Apple prepares to unveil its latest offering, the iPhone 17 series, on September 9th. A recent survey conducted by SellCell reveals some intriguing insights into consumer preferences and expectations.
According to the survey, a staggering 68.3% of active iPhone users are planning on upgrading to the iPhone 17. This high demand is particularly noteworthy given the satisfaction levels with current devices, with 71.7% of iPhone owners content with their current handsets.
Interestingly, the survey found that almost half of iPhone users (49%) state that nothing about Android appeals to them. However, the interest in a thinner iPhone 17 Air contradicts the lower percentage of those interested in owning it, as it is rumoured to be the thinnest iPhone ever. In fact, over a quarter (47.5%) of those surveyed would accept less battery life for a thinner iPhone 17.
The iPhone 17 series is expected to be a game-changer in the realm of photography, with the top driver for upgrades being battery life (53.2%). AI features, on the other hand, are less important, with just 7.1% citing them as a reason for an upgrade.
The survey also sheds light on consumer preferences in terms of the different iPhone models. Of those planning to upgrade, 38.1% will choose a Pro or Pro Max, 16.7% the standard model, and 13.5% the ultra-thin Air.
However, not everything is rosy for Apple. Over a quarter (27.1%) of iPhone owners surveyed feel that Apple has "lost its edge" versus rivals. This sentiment is further underscored by the fact that the majority of iPhone users surveyed also admit that Android is becoming more attractive.
Tariffs could potentially impact iPhone 17 purchases. The survey found that 36.8% would hold off if prices rise, and 29.2% might depending on the increase.
Despite these challenges, the survey paints a positive picture for Apple, with 72.9% of iPhone owners surveyed by SellCell saying they are more satisfied today than in past years. As we eagerly await the official unveiling of the iPhone 17 series, these findings offer a fascinating glimpse into consumer preferences and expectations.
