A Pleasant Afternoon Spending Time with Helena

In the picturesque town of Landshut, a special event was held on Sunday afternoon, bringing together the city's elderly residents and their caregivers. The annual Senior Afternoon event, hosted at a theatre tent, featured a performance of Jacques Offenbach's operetta, "Die schöne Helena."

Mayor Alexander Putz welcomed the visitors, expressing gratitude for the caregivers and volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year. He highlighted the importance and value of their work, emphasising that it is not just limited to special events but extends to institutions and welfare associations all year round, as mentioned by Edeltraud Nuhn, the deputy chairperson of the Senior Council.

The performance of "Die schöne Helena" served as the main attraction of the day. This operetta, known for its satirical portrayal of the Trojan War, humorously reimagines the mythological story. According to Mayor Putz, the war broke out when Helena, the beautiful wife of Spartan king Menelaos, was allegedly abducted by Paris. Offenbach's work cleverly parodies the myth, highlighting the vanities and absurdities of the characters.

Mayor Putz also shared an interesting historical tidbit. He explained that the Trojan War, and consequently, the stories of Homer and the performance of "Die schöne Helena," may never have occurred if Paris had simply declared that all three goddesses were incomparably wonderful, as opposed to choosing one as the most beautiful.

The event was a resounding success, with approximately 350 senior citizens in attendance. The caregivers and volunteers were thanked by both Mayor Putz and Edeltraud Nuhn for making the day possible. The Senior Afternoon event in Landshut is a testament to the community's commitment to celebrating and caring for its elderly residents.
