A new round commences in the "Road Oases" competition

The Ostalbkreis has once again triumphed in the "Species Protection" category of the annual "Street Oases" competition organised by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport. This marks the second consecutive year that the region has claimed the top spot.

State Secretary Elke Zimmer paid a visit to the winners to express her admiration for their efforts. The Ostalbkreis impressed with an outstanding professional concept in the "Species Protection" category, which focuses on areas that promote insect biodiversity. Measures such as planting strips of native plants strengthen biodiversity and serve as green corridors.

In the "Climate Protection" category, Überlingen emerged victorious last year for successfully redesigning several city center areas. Many volunteers from the "City Enhancer" initiative supported the project in Überlingen, demonstrating the power of community collaboration. The "Climate Protection" category focuses on innovative approaches that positively impact the climate through redesigned areas. Examples of measures in this category include planting climate-resistant plants and unsealing soils to allow rainwater to percolate better.

Municipalities can apply in both the "Climate Protection" and "Species Protection" categories. The first ten winners will receive the "Street Oasis" award. State Secretary Zimmer emphasized the importance of collaboration between administration and citizens in making the Street Oases successful. She personally thanked the Ostalbkreis for their efforts and praised their work as an inspiring example of what is possible when working together.

Applications for the 2025 "Street Oases" competition are open until October 10, 2025. The winners of the competition will be recognised for their contributions to climate and species protection, further inspiring other municipalities to take action.

Two apprentice street sweepers from the Ellwangen road maintenance department received the "Street Oasis 2024" winner's plaque, symbolising their significant role in the Ostalbkreis's success. The Ostalbkreis's continued victory in the "Species Protection" category serves as a testament to their dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
