New Leader Elected for the Green Party of England and Wales
Zack Polanski has been announced as the new leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, following a landslide victory in the recent leadership race. Polanski, who was previously the Deputy Leader of the Green Party, received a total of 20,411 votes, far surpassing his competitors.
The election comes at a time when the Green Party is experiencing a surge in membership. Following the recent election, the party reached a new record of over 68,500 members, marking a significant increase from the previous record of 50,000 members.
In his victory speech, Polanski promised to provide a "political home" for disillusioned voters and to "take on power and wealth" in the UK. He vowed to listen to and amplify the voices of the poorest and most marginalized communities, and to challenge truth to power.
Polanski has been critical of other political parties, particularly Reform UK, which he described as millionaires backed by billionaires who are destroying democracies, communities, and the planet. He warned Reform UK about charlatans pretending to serve working-class communities and urged the Greens to be "bold" and push for a mass-membership "eco-populist" movement.
Adrian Ramsay and Ellie Chowns were other candidates in the leadership race, but Polanski's landslide victory secured his position as the new leader of the Green Party. Mr. Chowles and Ms. Ramsay will resume their roles as MPs of North Herefordshire and Waveney Valley respectively.
It is not yet clear when or how the role of the parliamentary leader in Westminster will be filled. However, Polanski indicated that the party should elect a parliamentary leader in Westminster, but the details are unclear at this time.
Polanski is a member of the Green Party's London Assembly, and prior to his leadership campaign, he served as the Deputy Leader of the Green Party. In his victory speech, he paid tribute to the Green Party's MPs and expressed his commitment to working together to build a better future for all.
