Condemned to incarceration - A DHL courier was apprehended with a tracking device on their person.

The ex-mail carrier Calogero D. (58) was under scrutiny in the district court of Göppingen. The accusations? Commercial theft and breaking confidentiality of the postal system.

The Post Office apprehended him using a tracking device!

Calogero D. had a part of his childhood in Germany and later operated a bar in Italy. In 2019, he relocated to the Göppingen region and was enlisted by DHL as a mail carrier.

"Poststation 701" was his crime scene

His workplace: "Poststation 701", where Calogero D. picked up the packages and delivered them in a yellow van.

During the holiday season of 2021, Douglas' perfume shipments kept vanishing from this location. The next spring, mainly large parcels filled with cigarettes and branded clothes (Joop, Trigema) went missing, making a total of 25 packages.

A postal investigator narrated at the trial, "We spotted the loss pattern with this particular loot." As the surveillance camera was malfunctioning, the DHL investigators became creative: they set up a package containing cigarettes with a GPS tracker.

The signals led to Calogero D.'s apartment. The police were informed. At his place of residence, authorities found stolen goods worth over 15,000 euros. The stealing DHL courier was taken into custody and admitted everything.

The defendant attributes it to "immense foolishness"

Judge Seda Dogac (34) inquired from the suspect, "Why did you take all those parcels?" Calogero simply shrugged his shoulders, "It was a colossal foolishness." He smoked a packet of these cigarettes daily. He didn't sell the perfume and the branded attire.

The prosecutor Timo Hartmann (31) petitioned for a 1-year, 10-month prison sentence. Judge Dogac agreed with the request and suspended the sentence. Calogero D. must also pay a conditional fine of 4000 euros.

Calogero D. now has a job elsewhere, and the court considers his chances of reform positive. His 37-year-old fiancée, who shed tears on the witness stand, remained faithful to him and left the courthouse with him.
