A concluding part: No more of the same old days!
In the upcoming Bundesliga season, three of the league's most experienced referees - Deniz Aytekin, Tobias Welz, and Frank Willenborg - will be hanging up their whistles.
Deniz Aytekin, one of the leading personalities of the German referee elite, has decided to retire after much reflection. Aytekin, the DFB referee of the year in 2019, 2022, and 2024, is known for his top performances and unwavering commitment to the game. In his final season, he aims to continue acting with passion and finish his career with full commitment.
Tobias Welz, who has been a referee for 35 years, sees the upcoming season as the ideal time for his departure. Welz, who has officiated in 100 Bundesliga games, is content to make way for younger referees. He reflects that refereeing has demanded a lot from him but has also given him a lot back.
Frank Willenborg, another of the retiring referees, shares a similar sentiment. Willenborg, who is among the three experienced Bundesliga referees retiring in 2026, is happy to pass the torch to the next generation.
The departure of these esteemed referees brings significant changes to the DFB. Knut Kircher, referee chief at the DFB, emphasises the immense quality left behind by the retiring referees. Peter Sippel, another referee chief at the DFB, praises their outstanding commitment.
The DFB is planning ahead to fill the gaps left by Aytekin, Welz, and Willenborg. Max Burda, who has been recognised for his outstanding commitment by FIFA referee chief Pierluigi Collina, is one of the candidates being considered for promotion by the DFB leadership.
At this time, the DFL has not announced any changes regarding the VAR system. The focus is now on a smooth handover to the next generation of referees and honouring the achievements of the retiring referees.
The DFB respects the decision of the experienced referees and will honour their contributions to the game. As they step down, they leave behind a legacy of fairness, dedication, and passion for the beautiful game that will be keenly felt.
