£5M deal secures future of Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal amid climate threats
A new long-term agreement has been reached to secure the future of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. The Welsh Government and the Canal & River Trust will invest millions to address climate challenges and ensure the waterway's reliability for years to come.
The canal plays a key role in the local economy, contributing over £30 million annually and supporting more than 1,000 jobs across Wales. The deal follows a short-term arrangement due to expire in March 2026. Under the new agreement, the Welsh Government will provide up to £400,000 each year for five years, while the Canal & River Trust will contribute £100,000 annually. These funds will help maintain water levels and improve infrastructure resilience against drought and heavy usage.
A major part of the plan includes a £5 million refurbishment of the Manorafon pumping station near Llanfoist. By early 2026, new submersible pumps, electrical upgrades, and structural reinforcements will be installed. These improvements aim to strengthen water management, preventing drainage issues and ensuring consistent water levels.
The Deputy First Minister highlighted how climate change and unpredictable weather threaten the canal's maintenance. The agreement also establishes a partnership network to keep the waterway central to Welsh life. Ben Cottam, Regional Director for Glandŵr Cymru, stressed the canal's historical importance and its ongoing value to local communities.
The overall goal is to find sustainable solutions that protect the canal's future while preserving its economic and cultural role. The combined funding and infrastructure upgrades will help the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal adapt to climate pressures. With stronger water management and long-term financial backing, the canal is set to remain a vital asset for Wales' economy and heritage. The partnership ensures ongoing maintenance and operational stability for years ahead.
