Hofreiter stressed the importance of utilizing the funds to bolster Europe's infrastructure. "Well-functioning roads, bridges, and railways not only serve commuting, travel, and the economy. They also serve as a base for our defense capabilities," he said.

As for financing, the green politician suggested that the defense fund should be laid out similarly to the Corona Reconstruction Fund. "The EU Commission could borrow on the capital markets for this," he proposed.

Hofreiter also addressed the potential defense strikes by Ukraine on Russian soil. "This is about protecting the Ukrainian population. We should, consequently, allow Ukraine to utilize the provided weapons to defend against Russian fighter jets in their airspace," he said.

Background: Since Russia's incursion last year, Ukraine's Western backers have frequently emphasized that the weapons furnished were for self-defense and should not be used to assault Russia. Nonetheless, the US is currently discussing giving Ukraine permission to fire on Russian territory with Western arms.

It's important to note that Ukrainian armed forces have allegedly used armed Western weapons against Russian territory multiple times in the past year—with their Western partner's blessings. Additionally, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (64, SPD) has previously mentioned that Ukrainian assaults on Russia are routine as long as they aim to disrupt supply routes, for instance.
