40,000 flock to illegal rave on French military site despite unexploded bombs

An illegal rave at a French military site drew crowds of up to 40,000 over the weekend. The event, held on a former firing range, sparked a large emergency response after a shell was found near the party. Authorities are now pushing for stricter laws to prevent similar gatherings in the future. The so-called 'free party' began on Friday and carried on into Saturday. Organisers warned attendees not to light fires, dig, or pick up objects due to the risk of unexploded ordnance. Despite the dangers, numbers swelled from an estimated 20,000 in the morning to between 35,000 and 40,000 by evening.

Emergency services were stretched thin, with around 600 police officers and 45 firefighters deployed. Bomb disposal experts were called in after a shell was discovered near the party. Meanwhile, medics treated 12 people for minor injuries on Saturday morning.

The rave took place on a 10,000-hectare military site, where roads are usually closed during tests but open to the public at other times. Many revellers saw the event as both a chance to let off steam and a protest against proposed laws cracking down on unauthorised raves. The French parliament is now considering tougher penalties for illegal raves, including prison sentences for organisers and fines for attendees. The incident has highlighted the risks of such gatherings, particularly on former military land. Authorities will likely review security measures for similar sites in the future.
