2026 New Year Honours celebrate stars of entertainment, sports and public service

The 2026 New Year Honours List has recognised figures from entertainment, sport, politics, and charity. Knighthoods, damehoods, and other awards were given to well-known names for their contributions in various fields.

Among the recipients were actors, athletes, and public servants whose work has had a lasting impact on British society.

In entertainment, Idris Elba received a knighthood for his services to young people in Greater London. His efforts to tackle knife crime were particularly noted. Bill Bailey was also knighted for his long career in comedy and entertainment.

Meera Syal became a dame for her work in literature, drama, and charity. She has campaigned extensively for Alzheimer’s and dementia research. Cynthia Erivo, meanwhile, was made an MBE for her contributions to the arts. The world of sport saw Sarina Wiegman, manager of the England women’s football team, awarded an honorary damehood. Her players also received honours following their successes on the pitch. Ice dancing legends Christopher Dean and Jayne Torvill were knighted and made a dame, respectively, for their impact on British sport. In politics, Anneliese Dodds was granted a damehood for her parliamentary and political service. As MP for Oxford East and former Labour Party Chair, she played a key role in national debates. Amanda Pritchard, head of NHS England, was also made a dame for her leadership in healthcare. Business leaders Ian King, Simon Roberts, John Pettigrew, and Gary Hoffman became CBEs for their contributions to industry. Richard Harpin and Tristram Hunt were additionally awarded knighthoods for their work in business and public service.

The honours reflect a wide range of achievements across different sectors. Recipients include those who have shaped culture, improved public life, and supported communities.

The list highlights both long-standing careers and newer contributions, showing the diverse ways individuals have made a mark on the UK.
