2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI assessment: A stylish update for the legendary hatchback performance model

The latest iteration of the popular hot hatch, the Mk8.5 Volkswagen Golf GTI, has made its debut, boasting improved performance, a more practical cabin, and a host of new tech features.

Priced at a starting point of $58,990 plus on-road costs, the Mk8.5 Golf GTI is $2900 more expensive than its Mk8 predecessor. This increase in price reflects the enhanced features and capabilities that come with the new model.

Under the hood, the Mk8.5 Golf GTI is powered by the VW Group's 'EA888' 2.0-litre turbo-four engine, producing 195kW of power and 370Nm of torque. This power boost, combined with its revised adaptive dampers and trick differential, makes the Mk8.5 Golf GTI the most dynamic, fun, and fast regular Golf GTI yet, capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 250km/h.

The interior of the Mk8.5 Golf GTI has been significantly upgraded. A larger 12.9-inch touchscreen takes centre stage, featuring quicker reaction times and a reworked menu layout for easier navigation. New physical buttons for the steering wheel and an upgraded digital driver's display further enhance the driver's experience.

The cabin is also more practical and loaded with tech features. Despite a slightly smaller boot than a Hyundai i30 N, it almost doubles the size of a Toyota GR Corolla. Buyers can also opt for leather trim, heated and ventilated front seats, and an electric driver's seat with memory, adding an extra $3900 to the price.

Standard features for the Mk8.5 Golf GTI include 19-inch alloys, LED exterior lighting, adaptive dampers, tri-zone automatic climate control, the 12.9-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone mirroring, sat-nav, a 10.2-inch digital driver's display, 30-colour cabin ambient lighting, a chunky leather steering wheel with paddle shifters, nine airbags, AEB, adaptive cruise, lane guidance, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive high beam.

Servicing the Mk8.5 Golf GTI is expensive, with a $4170 bill for the first five years/75,000km, or $834 annually. However, this cost can be lessened slightly to $3570 with a pre-paid service pack. The Mk8.5 Golf GTI also comes with a five-year/unlimited km warranty, including 12 months of roadside assistance, which can be extended further with each dealer service.

The Mk8.5 Volkswagen Golf GTI retains the trademark GTI tartan trim, adding a touch of nostalgia to the modernised design. With its enhanced performance, upgraded interior, and abundance of tech features, the Mk8.5 Volkswagen Golf GTI is set to continue the legacy of the popular hot hatch.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI is now in its Mk8.5 generation, marking another step forward in the evolution of this iconic vehicle. With its fuel type being 95RON regular unleaded and a tank size of 50 litres, the Mk8.5 Golf GTI offers a blend of performance and practicality for everyday driving. In mixed testing, it achieved an impressive fuel economy of 8.4L/100km.

In conclusion, the Mk8.5 Volkswagen Golf GTI offers a compelling package for those seeking a high-performance, practical, and tech-packed hot hatch. With its improved interior, enhanced performance, and standard features, it is sure to appeal to a wide range of drivers.
