Former Fortuna goalkeeper diagnosed with cancer - Emotional plea from dying man Georg Koch.
In April 2023, ex-Fortuna goalkeeper Georg Koch, who played for Düsseldorf from 1991 to 1997, was diagnosed with an inoperable pancreatic cancer.
Prior to the relegation playoff match against Bochum, an emotional video message, addressed to the fans, was shown in the stadium:
"Dear Fortuna supporters, firstly thank you for your support, even for the banner in Kiel. It really moved me and provided me the strength to keep fighting and to know that I am a fighter."
Düsseldorf fans displayed a banner during the second division match in Kiel bearing the inscription: "The 90s backbone ... 1 ... We support you, Schorsch!"
In his message, Koch further stated: "However, today isn't about me. It's about Fortuna, about achieving something truly amazing - promotion to the 1st League. You are the lifeblood of this entire club, and you have to drive the club into the 1st League today. Though we won the first leg, that's not a guarantee; you have to give it your all today alongside the team to make this dream of the 1st League come true."
Koch openly talked about his illness, referred to them as "Schorsch": "I wish I could attend one more match for each club I played for. Now I can go back to the stadium again..."
Fortuna Düsseldorf has the potential to secure a 3:0 first leg victory for the seventh time and promote to the Bundesliga. Unfortunately, Koch cannot attend the game in person.
Fortuna Düsseldorf shared his emotional video message on Twitter: "Unfortunately, he's not in the stadium today. We're with you, Schorsch."
