Assault against the British legal system - Elderly protesters aged 82 and 85 express fury at the national library.
On Friday, environmental activist group "Just Stop Oil" shared a disconcerting video. It featured priest Dr. Sue Parfitt (82) chiseling away at the glass, while Judy Bruce (85) repeatedly hit it with a hammer.
In the video, Parfitt displays a banner reading, "The government is breaking the law." She explains, "As a Christian, I'm compelled to do whatever it takes to alleviate the immense pain that's on the horizon... we must put a stop to the oil."
There are only four remaining copies of the Magna Carta - one at Salisbury Cathedral, one at Lincoln Castle, and two in the British Library. The 13th-century English constitution states that nobody is above the law and that the church is independent of the monarch. The library reports that though the damaged historical document was fortunately unharmed.
The UK is increasingly clamping down on climate activists, having already interfered with various sporting events or caused traffic disruptions. When protesters attempted to cover Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's residence with black fabric in 2023 to demonstrate against his oil policy, laws were tightened.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed they had made two arrests connected to the event at the National Library.
