El Cortez Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Is Undergoing a $20 Million Renovation
The oldest functioning casino in Las Vegas is preparing for a makeover.
El Cortez is refurbishing 10,000 square feet of its traditional casino area and extending it by 5,000 square feet.
The $20 million revamp will see the creation of a high-end gaming lounge and two new bars that maintain the casino's pre-World War II-style ambiance.
One of these bars is referred to as a "roulette" bar, while the other is a "show" bar with a massive 10x20-foot screen showing black-and-white movies and live sports. The "roulette" bar will replace Ike’s, which launched in 2017.
The resort is also incorporating two contemporary additions - the restaurant Hot Noods by Chinglish and a standard Starbucks - to keep up with the trendy Millennials and Gen-Zers it has been successful in attracting so far.
Recent improvements include a $30 million facelift of the hotel's original 47 rooms, Tower Premium rooms, and casino washrooms.
"We are excited to announce our latest development project, which marks an important milestone for El Cortez and the downtown Vegas community," said El Cortez's CEO and chairman, Kenny Epstein, in a statement. "These improvements come at a time of increased interest from both locals and tourists to Fremont Street."
Work is scheduled to commence this summer, concluding in early 2024.
The iconic El Cortez casino first opened its doors on November 7, 1941, just as Fremont Street was starting to be paved up to that point.
