I can't comprehend this. - Effenberg lambastes Cologne's manager!
In a recent recorded interview, Cologne's President, Wolf, is seen beaming with joy after their 3:2 win against Union. He says, "We never thought we'd be relegated. We're still in the game. Someone told me the team needed exactly this moment and that not much can happen to us now."
This statement is peculiar considering the still challenging situation Cologne faces. Although they secured a dramatic victory in the final stages of the game, their rescue is far from certain, and relegation to Bundesliga 2 seems more likely than redemption.
Yet, this isn't the first time Wolf's words don't match the situation at hand. Months ago, during a dismal period for Cologne when they had just parted ways with their ex-coach, Steffen Baumgart, and received confirmation of a transfer ban, Wolf still claimed his club was "on the right track."
The panel on Doppelpass shares the confusion, with expert Stefan Effenberg stating, "I didn't understand his interview two weeks ago, and I still don't now."
Presenter Florian König explains, "At the time, he said FC wanted to be promoted again in two years. Now he says, 'We never believed in relegation.' It doesn't really align, does it?"
Even Sky commentator Uli Köhler added his thoughts, saying, "Things are a bit jumbled in Cologne... And when I hear that, I'm right there with Stefan: I don't really understand it."
The previous interview on the FC website also caused a considerable amount of outrage from fans. Cologne's president announced that there wouldn't be any personnel repercussions in management, even if they were to get relegated: "We are all clear. We will continue on our path and fight for our course. That applies to us as a board. That applies to our three managing directors, whose work we are convinced of."
Now, there's renewed frustration and criticism directed at Wolf regarding his perceived disconnect from the reality of the situation, with the team putting in maximum effort to avoid relegation while the rest of the football world laughs at the club president, who'd rather leave the spotlight to others after their stunning win against Union.
